The Firebird Affair centers on the suspicious death of Emily, the beautiful wife of Washington Tribune correspondent Todd Martin. In 1991, she collapsed over lunch with a friend in a Moscow restaurant. A massive heart attack, Moscow authorities said and the US Embassy concurred. They shipped her body home to the U.S. without Todd even being aware she had died. He was out of contact covering one of the conflicts flaring up as the Soviet Union disintegrated.
But Todd has managed to rebuild his life; he's now the Tribune's chess columnist, from time to time drifting in and out of depression. He has always been doubtful Emily's death was an accident. His estranged son, Rick, is certain his mother was murdered, and blames his father for failing to protect her.
By 2002, Todd gets an opportunity to establish the truth after a Russian spy approaches the CIA wanting to defect. The spy reveals the existence of a KGB mole inside the U.S. government. He also alleges that the KGB played a role in Emily's death by sneaking a psychotropic drug into her drink. Holz, the former Moscow CIA station chief, now a senior CIA official, offers Todd the chance to go to Moscow on a rogue mission to uncover the traitor's identity. Todd undertakes the mission that leads him as well as Holz to confront wholly unexpected results.
The Firebird Affair explores the consequences of duplicity and betrayal, in both Moscow and Washington. It revolves around the actual KGB-led plot to remove Gorbachev from power, capturing the drama of the last months of Cold War and the subsequent changes in our public life.
The Firebird Affair (Audible Audio Edition) Dusko Doder Andy Caploe Audible Studios Books
For me, a good novel has to both entertain and educate. The Firebird Affair clearly does both. The book is a spy mystery, with a plot that twists and turns before coming to the surprising denouement that resolves all our guessing. Along the way, the author shares with us his love of fine dining, good (and plentiful) booze, and, presumably, beautiful, sexy women. He sets the scene expertly -- Washington DC, Moscow, the "stans" of the former Soviet Union. He draws a sympathetic portrait of a journalist who was in his prime during the Cold War, but who now quietly manages the chess column of the newspaper.
Yet the author (a former foreign correspondent for the Washington Post) also excels at conveying the real substance of the transformation from the old (Soviet) to the new Russia -- the political intrigues, the economic corruption, the social upheaval. And he lucidly paints the evolution of the newspaper industry and the impact of its downward trajectory on journalists and their careers and lives.
The result is a most satisfying and intelligent read, not to be missed!

The Firebird Affair (Audible Audio Edition) Dusko Doder Andy Caploe Audible Studios Books Reviews
After a long time of stubbornly opposing the new technology, The Firebird Affair was the first book that I read on my new device. I did not regret choosing this exciting novel to take my virginity. The book is extremely well written by the author who uses his words as a conductor in masterpiece. The publisher should have done much better job though; the book has a lot of typos. The differences between Moscow today compared to Moscow in the past (politically, economically and architecturally) could not be better described. The author is obviously intimately familiar with both. Cleverly mixing the real historical events and fiction author also reminds me about the time when politics were reserved for the serious politicians and not luftiguz (word used in the book to describe somebody in non flattering ways) politicians that we see today. In my opinion as an ex-military guy serving 3 different countries involved in a couple of different wars, description of Modus Vivendi of KGB, CIA and Russian mafia is very accurate. Alas, the book was so interesting that I read it in approximately two days which is, considering my busy schedule, amazing. I will certainly be on a look out for another book by Dusko Doder.
Kept me at the edge of my seat. A good read for the cold war era times when I was younger and could not get enough of this spy vs. spy story line.
Good book that I enjoyed but found I struggled through parts of it (probably reader rather than author issue though).
The storyline dragged and I had little interest in the characters. Would not recommend for readers who like action thrillers.
An interesting story...but lacked excitement, in my opinion. Towards the end it picked up and kept wanting to know how it would end. In summary I would say is OK, but.......
This is a brilliant book by a brilliant author. I couldn't put it down. It's a page-turner that quickly draws you into a mystery -- the death of Todd Martin's wife years ago in the old Soviet Union -- and new clues that point to murder. Not just any murder. Murder at the hands of the old KGB. Todd Martin, a former high-flying foreign correspondent who is something of an anti-hero, uncovers more and more uncomfortable truths as he follows the clues. It is modern-day le Carre, thought-provoking, wonderful, full of real surprises and moral dilemmas. And bringing alive the ambiguity and unease of the new Russia and the world of spies. Great, great read.
Let me say I wasn't sure about this one.
For the first 75% of the book it was very disjointed.
Not exactly a thriller, as it seemed to move too slowly.
The last 25% made me glad I stuck with it, although the ending left me a bit disappointed. Here we have a writer agreeing that no one will ever know the secret, and the next thing he does is tell others all about it. The book is full of inconsistencies like this.
One page "They're tapping your phone and e-mail"
Next page "I sat down and wrote Rick a long e-mail and told him the whole story."
Technical errors. I would think a modern writer would know that American Airlines (or anyone else) hasn't flown a 727 for about 20 yrs. So why pick that for your book?
Editing, or lack of. I've never seen so many copy errors. This could have been proof read by a 10 yr. old and fixed most of them. (Hint spell check doesn't find examples where the wrong word is used, but it's a real word.) "It was going one 10 am." Obviously meant "on" not "one".
I read the same paragraph back to back.
Redundant words. "We went to our favorite restaurant favorite."
Lib bias. "The country is being run by neo-con extremists like Cheney and Rumsfeld. They're tapping phone lines."
Gee, I wonder if the author is calling Obama a socialist left wing extremist, now that he signed a bill to lock citizens up without a trial? I'm sick of the "It's Bush's fault" mantra. Spend a little more time fixing the errors and less whining.
Can we ban the non word "neo-con" from the vocabulary?
When I see it, I know the author isn't well informed. (or an "inside the beltway snob")
Update I looked up Doder and I should have known.
"Dusko Doder is a former Washington Post reporter"
Why 2 stars? It was free.
